What is the Northshore Community Foundation?

We are a community foundation, determined by the IRS to be a public charity, with three primary roles: a resource for philanthropist, a funder for nonprofits, and a supporter of community leadership projects.  The Northshore Community Foundation serves our donors by helping them become more effective philanthropists.  We assist them in meeting their philanthropic goals by providing in-depth knowledge of nonprofit organizations and community initiatives.

How was the Foundation started?

The Foundation was founded in January of 2007 with support and resources from the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, who wanted to assure the Northshore region had a viable tool for community development.

How is the Foundation organized?

The Northshore Community Foundation is governed by directors who are appointed for three year terms.  Members may serve three year terms.  Members may serve two consecutive terms after which they must rotate off for at least one year.  The Board is comprised of at most eighteen directors elected by members.  The immediate past Board Chair serves as member of the Executive Committee and member of the board, as does the Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation.

How can I get involved in the Foundation?

You can become a member or donor, volunteer by serving on a committee.

Why give through the Foundation?

We assist donors in their charitable giving with our in-depth community knowledge.  We identify opportunities that strengthen the Northshore community and provide administrative support including quarterly statements and IRS documentation.  The Foundation provides professional fund management and offers a variety of giving options including cash, stock, and real estate.

What are the different types of funds?

Donor or Corporate Advised Funds, Agency Endowment, Unrestricted, Designated Beneficiary, Field of Interest, Organization Fund, and Scholarship.

What does it mean to be a member of the Northshore Community Foundation?

Members of the Northshore Community Foundation provide the resources that drive the activities and leadership programs we undertake an an annual basis.  Without membership dues our staff could not continue to provide the support that we offer to both the nonprofit agencies and our donors.

What is a Grant?

A grant is an award to a qualified public charity.

How are grants awarded by the Foundation?

Proposals are submitted to the Foundation according to the grant guidelines.  A competitive grant making committee reviews all proposals and awards grants based on funding availability and the compelling need for the program.
