Hands That Touch Hearts Fund

The Hands That Touch Hearts Fund supports First Love Academy, as well as other programs for those living in poverty in St. Tammany Parish. Upward Community Services and Christ Episcopal Church in Covington will partner to provide early learning classes that offer school readiness activities, nurturing, and nourishment for children ages 2-4.

Classes will be held at Faith Bible Church beginning on September 21, 2015. Each day, lunch is provided for up to 10 children and adult volunteers. First Love provides an opportunity for 2-4 year old economically disadvantaged children to develop social and pre-academic skills. Age appropriate activities are designed by a certified early childhood teacher to help get the children ready for Head Start or Title I Pre-K. The children live in an area where many families and individuals live below the poverty line. The children who are served by First Love Academy will attend one or more of the following schools: Covington Elementary, Lyon Elementary, and Abita Elementary. These schools serve an area with a high number of economically disadvantaged families. Between 57% and 74% of the children attending these schools qualify for free or reduced lunch. All of the families of children who attend First Love Academy qualify for free or reduced lunch and are asked to provide proof of income.

They are at considerable risk for deficits in cognitive, social, and emotional development. Programs such as First Love are of critical importance in helping these children get ready for school and life. According to the National Center for Children Living in Poverty, “At age 4 years, children who live below the poverty line are 18 months below what is considered normal for their age group; by age 10 that gap is still present. For children living in the poorest families, the gap is even larger.”

We are asking that churches and businesses in our community join us in supporting the children of Covington and Abita Springs. The cost per child is $3,000. Please consider sponsoring one or more children.
