Planners to Compete for “Old Mandeville” Town Center Plan

The Northshore Community Foundation, in partnership with the City of Mandeville, will interview three renowned planning firms that are vying to design a town center for Old Mandeville.

Representatives of the three firms will be interviewed Wednesday, Nov. 17 at City Hall. Each will offer a presentation and respond to pre-prepared questions. The proceedings are open to the public.

The schedule is:

9-10  a.m. - Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co. of Miami

10-11 a.m. - Tunnell-Spangler and Walsh and Associates of Atlanta.

11 a.m. to Noon - Dover, Kohl and Partners of Coral Gables, Fla.

Duany Plater is known for designing Seaside, Fla., a pioneering New Urbanism development. The firm has done master plans for downtown Baton Rouge and the Lake Charles lakefront. Tunnell-Spangler and Walsh has worked extensively in Atlanta and created the master plan for Abita Trace, a traditional neighborhood in Abita Springs.  Dover, Kohl has designed master plans for cities, including the City of Hammond, created new urban neighborhoods, and refined a design for the mixed-use, mixed-income neighborhood that is replacing St. Bernard housing project in New Orleans.

The City of Mandeville is seeking a plan that will guide the creation of a town center at the Mandeville Trailhead, a popular waypoint along the Tammany Trace, a 28-mile trail that connects the historic communities of Covington, Abita Springs, Mandeville, Lacombe and Slidell.  While there are several charming three-story mixed-use buildings already at the site, future creative infill opportunities exist for about 75% of the town center district.

The plan will embrace New Urbanism and Smart Growth principles to create a resilient Town Center of timeless, inspiring design. It will seek to focus the city’s economic energy into a critical mass and provide for the civic needs of identity, community and sense of place as well as provide an identifiable civic and city center.

NCF and the City of Mandeville are providing $175,000 for the creation of the plan. The funds were secured from the Louisiana Recovery Authority Comprehensive Resiliency Program.
