Disaster Response & Recovery

Immediate Generosity Matters

In times of disaster, community foundations play a vital role by leveraging their deep local knowledge, resources, and networks to provide immediate and long-term relief. Acting as trusted coordinators, we quickly raise funds and distribute them to the nonprofits and organizations that are best positioned to address urgent needs such as food, shelter, medical care, etc. Our established relationships with local governments and agencies allow us to respond swiftly and effectively, ensuring that aid reaches those most impacted.

Historical Efforts

Northshore Community Foundation was born out of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, making disaster response central to our mission from the beginning. Our strategic coordination and grantmaking have delivered meaningful support to communities impacted by a wide range of disasters, including hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and even a global pandemic.

East St. Tammany Tornadoes

On April 10, 2024, four EF-2 tornadoes struck Slidell, Louisiana, leaving 30,000 residents without power and displacing over 50 families. In response, the Northshore Community Foundation granted $150,000 in emergency relief, partnered with local landlords to rehouse families, and provided short-term hotel vouchers. Essential care items and food were also distributed at local schools, showcasing the Foundation’s swift support for the community.

During Hurricane Ida, the Northshore Community Foundation provided over $1 million in relief, distributing 4,739 family care boxes, 30,777 hot meals, 30,550 gallons of fuel, and helping 125 seniors return home. We repaired 25 homes, allocating $50,000 for repairs and cleanup, and committed $100,000 to long-term case management. Additionally, we partnered with NAMI St. Tammany to offer free online therapy, ensuring accessible mental health support for Northshore residents.
